And not only fans, boxers are also having interest in joining MMA (such as James Toney).
One reason that Toney cited was something like "they don't make big fights in boxing anymore, but MMA (UFC in particular) put up the fights that people want to see".
This comment further solidifies what Dana said about boxing promoters that they have "lost" their love for the sport of boxing and only think about money.
If that's true then sooner or later boxing will just die out and be a sport of the past. I think the boxing promoters should wake up and see what MMA is doing right and incorporate that to boxing. The pre-fight shows, "road to..."-series and other gimicks that work for MMA should also have an equivalent for boxing. There are for sure lots of talented boxers but unfortunately people don't know them due to lack of promotions. So when they have fights, many people don't care to watch at all just because no one knows them and why they are in that fight.
Ali gave fans lots of reason and story why he and Foreman will be fighting back in the days. That was a great promotion! But now, what do we see?
MMA cards right now are generally better than boxing cards because in boxing most fans just watch the main card, but in MMA you can watch the undercards.
Come on boxing promoters and boxers, are you just gonna go down like that?
HBO Boxing has their 24/7 series, airing every week a month before fight night. But this is no match to the promotion style of MMA these days. Also there are usually two UFC events a month, excluding WEC (somewhat "branch" of UFC, for 155lbs. and below fighters). This is so much overwhelming when compared to boxing.
ReplyDeleteI think boxing will not die that easily because there are still majority of people not watching MMA for the reason they say that the latter is so "brutal".
